The End of Time (Canada, 2012, 109 min)

In 2013 the Drive-In screening at the Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film will present digitally for the first time. The winds of change have fallen upon the Hanover Drive-In, and though it is sad to see 35mm go, it will make programming more diverse in terms of choice of films, and ultimately in possible programs.

The End of Time is a visually stunning meditation on the nature of time. Peter Mettler begins with archival footage of US Air Force pilot Joe Kittiger, who flew a balloon to the unprecendented height of 102,800 feet, and then parachuted out. The film continues with scenes and individuals shot across the globe that together offer a dizzying range of perspectives on time: scientists at work on the particle accelerator at CERN, Buddhists visiting the tree where Buddha was enlightened, electronic musician Richie Hawtin exploring new musical possibilities with machines, the now abandoned site of Henry Ford’s first factory in Detroit, and a lone remaining resident in an area being consumed by lava pouring forth from an active volcano. Throughout these narratives Mettler draws eerie connections between the disparate places and events noting cycles of renewal and destruction, while relentlessly pushing at the limits of our understanding of time.
